Principal Engineer, Product Design

Principal Engineer, Product Design

Full-time, On-site, Oxford, UK

£70,000 - £90,000

This role sits in our newly formed Product Design Engineering function which consists of a spectrum of engineers from mechanical specialists to product design and human factors designers. This role will lead a team product designers focusing on our instrument/analyser, the 'Origin' and consumable cartridge through V&V into production, support bespoke test equipment, and develop future architectures.   • Own the product design of the analyser instrument and the consumable.
  • Drive the Product Design Team to utilise robust Engineering practices including Design FMEA. DFM/DFA, Six Sigma, Simulation & Modelling, Designed Experiments & Fail Fast methodologies.
  • Manage Requirements – translate defined high-level user needs into industrial design, human factors and functional requirements of both the analyser and consumable.
  • Flow these requirements into related Mechanical / Software requirements (Design Inputs) that can be documented, verified and certified.
  • Own end-to-end planning & executing V&V activities related to Product Design to verify the design is fit for purpose.
  • Rapid Find / Fix cycles – drive swift, efficient iterative proving strategies and related design/fix activities to deliver high-velocity design maturity ‘growth’ to the consumable programme
  • Responsible for all engineering documentation - working with QARA on ISO13485 regulatory submission/approval.



  • Proven experience of several design cycles of Product Design across medical or related domains (IVD/regulated/medical electronics)
  • Experience of Industrial Design and Human Factors – preferably across complex electro-mechanical equipment as well as high volume consumables, from concept to volume production.
  • 3D CAD SME
  • Knowledge and experience of mass manufacturing techniques, especially castings & injection moulding
  • Detailed design and specification of components and assemblies for manufacture
  • Experience of the design of User Interfaces / User Experience
  • Knowledge of Fluidic/microfluidic devices
